Jan AdairMissouri Artist Jan Adair

An accomplished artist in watercolor and acrylics, Jan Adair early
specialized in portraiture with commissions in the West and Southwest
United States. While a recipient of awards for her watercolor portraits
in Houston and Oklahoma City, as well as being complimented by prize-
winning recognition in juried competitions in Missouri, her interest
in horses, nature, trees, flowers, children have influenced her artistic
endeavors. Painting in an impressionistic and semi-abstract style, Jan
Adair has found the thundering power, symmetry and grace of the
sport horse a fascination and one she captures and brings to life in her
drawings.

One reviewer comments that “Jan Adair’s painterly touch has an
ethereal quality, wanting to be unconstrained, yet presently disciplined
to interpret a face, a landscape, a flower. Her brush stroke suggests the
vigor and poetic vitality that promise an unrestricted form.”

Born in Houston. Texas, Jan Adair is the great granddaughter of a
pioneer Oklahoma 89’er family, raised and educated in Oklahoma.
Receiving her classical training and a B.A. Fine Arts from Principia
College, Elsah, Illinois in 1955, Adair followed with graduate studies
at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Houston before
moving to St. Louis in the mid 1960s. For more than a decade she
owned and operated Adair Art Gallery in St Louis County underneath
Straubs Town & County store. A teacher of watercolor and acrylic
painting, Adair was a member of the St. Louis Artist’s Guild art section
and exhibited her work in Misssouri, Illinois, Oklahoma, and Texas. Jan
Adair’s work is included in public and private collections.
